Forestry Mulching That’s Right for You
This project, totaling about six acres, was for a private landowner in the Lexington, Texas area. The vegetation consisted mainly of Yaupon understory or underbrush and was located within a woodland forest. The forest consisted of Post Oaks and Live Oaks, as well as some Eastern Red Cedar. The challenge was that you could mulch Yaupon, but it would come back. It is a lot like Mesquite as it comes back from the roots. Their root system is like a spider web, and they continue to sprout back up from other roots that remain underground. Spraying it chemically has been met with mixed results, according to landowners we’ve spoken to, but many will do this.
Cedar Eaters will typically do the initial land clearing with a large mulching machine and let the landowner keep it down or kill it off with chemicals. However, if they let it go and don’t do anything, we will usually need to go back through an area with a skid steer mulcher every two to three years. It doesn’t take long to retreat an area of smaller Yaupon with a skid steer mulcher.
The other option is to doze and burn the area, but in many cases, that damages the root systems of the hardwoods the landowner is trying to save and ultimately kills them.
While it’s not an easy process, our experienced team will discuss the options, and depending on the land’s intended use, we’ll determine the best land clearing and forestry mulching method together.
