Establish Native Vegetation with Forestry Mulching
Forestry mulching is the environmentally-friendly land clearing process of cutting, trimming and grinding down unwanted trees, downed limbs, dead trees, and underbrush. This leaves a layer of nutrient-rich mulch that creates a natural fertilizer to promote the growth of native vegetation. The mulch aids in preventing the growth of unwanted invasive tree species like Cedar. However, forestry mulching is not the end all solution, it can significantly reduce species like Yaupon, Briar, and various other tree species from the understory of a larger hardwood forest but it does not eliminate them completely.
In order to eradicate a species like Yaupon a chemical treatment would be necessary to successfully kill some returning vegetation. If chemical application is not an option we often perform forestry mulching with one of our larger mulching machines initially and then provide follow up treatments of previously opened areas with a smaller mulching unit every two to three years. Eventually these areas will be overtaken by native grasses and plants that will choke out the Yaupon growing underneath the hardwood forest.
Depending on the use of the property, Forestry Mulching may not be the right application if you intend to farm forested land. If farming is your end goal you would likely need uproot everything and start over. This can be very damaging to trees to the root systems of the trees you intend to save often killing larger hardwoods off over time due to root damage.
If you intend to keep the forest intact but open up access to the forest while saving as many hardwoods as possible then Forestry Mulching is the correct approach. With Cedar Eater brush clearing services, we often deploy our mulchers on properties where they need trails, property lines, or small openings mulched in upwards of 3 to 4 acres within the forest. This process elimates burn piles along trails, fence lines, and openings that often get pushed into standing vegetation within the forest making it impossible for landowners to burn. Forestry mulching is an invaluable resource in the conservation of land, improving its value, use and aesthetics.
Forestry Mulching to Prevent Wildfires
Forestry mulching is a proactive way to reduce the risk of wildfires by removing ladder fuels such as underbrush, small trees, downed and overgrown limbs. Mulching this vegetation limits the ability for fires to move upward and spread rapidly across treetops while also lowering the heat intensity in the event of a fire. Be proactive in protecting your land with Forestry Mulching to decrease the risk of fire. Eliminating these ladder fuels into beneficial mulch around the boundaries and internally on your property to create better access for those whom may have to fight fire on your property.
