Cedar Eaters of Texas employs this method, utilizing specialized machinery we call the “Grubber” which has a patented grubbing bucket and retractable thumb to extract entire trees, roots and all. Unlike traditional techniques that often involve repeated applications of chemicals or extensive root plowing, grubbing is healthier for the environment and preserves the habitat you want to keep on your property.

Skid Steer with ROOT-N-ALL®

The ROOT-N-ALL® grubbing attachment was designed by two of Cedar Eaters’ employees to satisfy customers who needed smaller mesquite trees grubbed. This attachment mounts to a skid steer and has two hydraulic pincers that help stabilize the tree.

At the same time, the grubbing action is being performed with the V-blade bucket. This process is considerably less invasive than our excavator when dealing with smaller mesquite trees.

When the grubbing is complete, we can detach the ROOT-N-ALL® and switch to a grapple attachment to pile the grubbed vegetation. During this process, much of the dirt gets raked back into the holes, providing a ready-to-use pasture capable of supporting livestock and wildlife immediately.

The ROOT-N-ALL® is a universal attachment for skid loaders that is no longer available for purchase by private landowners.

Mesquite Grubbing FAQs

Here are some frequent questions that we receive regarding our mesquite grubbing services.

Why do you suggest the use of a grubber when clearing mesquite?

We have mulched fields of mesquite in the past and if they are not maintained the mesquite will grow back. We were not happy with this result so we set out to find a solution that was cheaper and less invasive than dozing or root plowing.

Unlike a dozer, the Grubber selectively neutralizes the mesquite by removing the taproot with minimal soil disturbance. This method allows you to keep the natural grasses already growing in your pasture and you will not lose valuable topsoil like you would with a dozer.

Since the Grubber removes the taproot in one move your cost is much lower than dozing and root plowing and you will have a higher rate of kill than by chemically spraying.

Why are cedar and mesquite trees perceived as a water-wasting nuisance?

Both cedars and mesquites are very invasive on our water supply. Though both can consume a lot of water, they have different ways of retrieving it. Cedars are very good at catching the water before it hits the ground and mesquites are quite efficient at pulling the water out of the ground.

These trees are native to the Texas Hill Country and surrounding areas but were kept in check by Native Americans and wildland fires. With the induction of the livestock industry and the breaking apart of large tracts of land it has allowed these trees to flourish as they can no longer be maintained by wildland fires. Both species can spread very quickly covering hundreds of acres in under a decade.

Not only can these trees consume large amounts of water a day but their sheer numbers can cripple healthy grassland for livestock and local wildlife in the years to come if they are not managed.

Do we clear other types of vegetation?

We are not only concerned about cedar but also with mesquite, huisache, yaupon, and a variety of other vegetation that are viewed as water-wasting nuisances to Texans.

What size jobs do you do?

We work with landowners who own thousands of acres all the way down to those with one acre. Although our primary focus is on the private landowners, we also work closely with commercial contractors, municipalities, and governmental agencies.

For many of our customers that own larger tracts of land we will develop a clearing plan that takes a course of several years and will work within their yearly budgets to meet their wildlife and ag exemption needs.

As for the smaller jobs, we do require an 8hr. minimum.

How big of mesquite trees can you remove?

Our excavator, the “Grubber” can extract trunks up to 30” in diameter, if necessary.

Our methods avoid the loss of topsoil and grasses and allow you to permanently rid your property of bothersome mesquites without damaging the environment around them.
